Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Azure, issuing in fess point a pair of stylized wings displayed Argent and overall a fleam abased Tenn fimbriated of the second.  Attached below the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "ACUTE AND ALERT" in Black letters.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the colors traditionally associated with Aviation.  The wings allude to aviation; the fleam, a heraldic lancet, represents the combat activities of the 1st Aviation Battalion as a Reconnaissance Troop during World War II.  It is also symbolic of the numerical designation and the five battle honors awarded the 5th Aviation Battalion for service in World War II.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 5th Aviation Battalion on 22 May 1962.  It was amended to change the colors of the shield and revised the symbolism on 22 April 1983.  The insignia was redesignated effective 16 November 1987, for the 5th Aviation Regiment with the description and symbolism revised.

Crest

The hawk, noted for its keen eyesight and hunting instincts, represents the 1st Aviation Battalion's "Baptism of Fire" as the 5th Reconnaissance Troop.  The campaign, Normandy, is symbolized by the blue collar and gold fleur-de-lis.  The hawk is particularly apt as it complements the 1st Aviation Battalion's capabilities and its history.
