Shield
Ultramarine blue and golden orange are the colors traditionally associated with Aviation. The wings allude to aviation; the fleam, a heraldic lancet, represents the combat activities of the 1st Aviation Battalion as a Reconnaissance Troop during World War II. It is also symbolic of the numerical designation and the five battle honors awarded the 5th Aviation Battalion for service in World War II.
Crest
The hawk, noted for its keen eyesight and hunting instincts, represents the 1st Aviation Battalion's "Baptism of Fire" as the 5th Reconnaissance Troop. The campaign, Normandy, is symbolized by the blue collar and gold fleur-de-lis. The hawk is particularly apt as it complements the 1st Aviation Battalion's capabilities and its history.
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 5th Aviation Battalion on 22 May 1962. It was amended to add a crest and change the colors of the shield on 22 April 1983. The insignia was redesignated effective 16 November 1987, for the 5th Aviation Regiment with the symbolism revised.
